This project developed an on-farm food safety risk management education program for farm workers (bilingual English and Spanish) and provided them the training including the tools and resources to identify and manage food safety risks as they grow and handle fresh produce for human consumption. The project team included representation from the state agriculture agency, commodity groups, extension agents, farmers market organizations, and students. The target clientele were small and mid-size farms, beginning farmers, and socially disadvantaged farmers in Louisiana who received the in-person hands-on training. Project activities helped farmworkers implement food safety practices and comply with federal and market driven food safety requirements. Twelve food safety training were offered around Louisiana that includes on-farm workers training, farmers market training, good agricultural practices (GAPs) training and field visits with a total participants of 360 farm workers and growers. A total of 217 farm workers and growers indicated their knowledge and awareness of food safety risks associated with growing, harvesting, packing, holding, and handling of fresh produce were increased through the food safety workshops. Growers that attended the course conducted risk assessment (65), implemented GAPs and FSMA requirements (65) and developed record keeping (50) practices. The resources were used by >15,000 individuals.
