Project Overview
Farmers and ranchers (F&R) in the Caribbean need to manage risks by using tools and approaches that will help them reduce the production risks. One way to manage risks is by purchasing farm insurance. Since 2017 F&R in Puerto Rico have suffered many losses due to extreme weather conditions associated with climate change, including: earthquakes, hurricanes, droughts, flooding, and even a pandemic. After these uncertain events F&R have seen the need to purchase crop insurance. In addition, they have seen the need of having detailed accounting records especially to submit claims and evidence to farm insurance. With project funds we proposed to deliver accounting, financial, skills, and tools for F&R so they can have up-to-date accounting information reduce financial risks and prepare for the next events. Trainings were conducted to two groups for a total of 441 participants with 16 contact hours per group. A focus group was conducted to gather information about their needs regarding managing risks. Participants were invited to the project conference with the objective of helping them be prepared for future natural disasters or emergencies. Presentations were selected based on focus groups including: crop insurance, how to create a farm emergency plan, developed tools, and results from the focus groups.
